03 / CONNECTED HARDWARE & AI AGENTS

When a premium device ships with an amnesic agent.

The failure is visible to the user: repeated reminders, ignored device data, lost preferences, and a support team that asks them to start over.

Direct answer

A reliable hardware agent combines multi-day user context, live device events, product and recovery knowledge, intelligent notification rules, and the support system. The agent must act on what the device already knows and preserve the full history when a person takes over.

The customer failure is painfully simple

A user said yesterday: “Remind me after 7 PM. Do not disturb me in the morning.” Today, the ring has already recorded the activity target as complete. At 7 AM, the assistant still sends: “Good morning. Time to start today’s activity.”

After several repetitions, the user disables notifications or returns the device. If they contact support, the agent’s conversation and the device event are missing, so the representative asks them to explain everything again.

The problem is broken continuity

The early agent is often isolated from the rest of the product. Preferences disappear between sessions. Device telemetry is not translated into usable events. The notification service fires on a schedule rather than the user’s current state. Support sees a ticket but not the history that created it.

This is not fixed by rewriting the prompt.

The hardware company needs a shared operating context across the user, device, agent, and internal team.

The infrastructure the scenario requires

  • Persistent context: preferences, goals, constraints, recovery state, and prior guidance survive across days.
  • Device event layer: raw telemetry becomes normalized events with time, confidence, source, and user identity.
  • Decision policy: the agent checks completion, quiet hours, contradictions, and risk before contacting the user.
  • Knowledge and actions: product guidance, recovery protocols, care plans, warranty, and support actions are available under permission.
  • Support continuity: a representative sees the relevant conversation, device event, attempted action, and recommended next step.
  • Evaluation: historical and simulated cases test repeated reminders, unsafe guidance, missed events, and broken handoffs.

What the FDE team delivers

The team first reconstructs the failure from interaction logs, device events, notification rules, and support cases. It then joins these systems into one traceable event path, builds candidate context and suppression policies, runs them against historical cases and sandbox simulations, and releases the winning change to limited live traffic.

The final output is not a Personal Agent concept. It is the hardware company’s working agent infrastructure: connected to its product, device data, customer context, and support operation.

How to measure the result

Use duplicate and mistimed notification rate, preference recall, device-event response accuracy, AI-feature retention, support escalation, return-related contact, and customer satisfaction. No production outcome should be claimed until the company confirms it against its own baseline.

Evidence note: the scenario illustrates a common connected-hardware failure pattern. It does not publish an unverified client result.
